AEG Lavamat 800HC Automatic Washer
Another Zanussi, this time wrapped up in AEG clothing. AEG looked to Zanussi for their budget model from at least 1970 - this model is from the late 1970s/early 1980s and is not unlike the 118T that I have already posted as the programmes are pretty much identical.

Hoover "Matchbox" Keymatic Washing Machine Model 3243. This particular machine was built in June 1972 and, at the time of filming, was just over 50 years old. The wash cycle is selected from a "Keyplate" - a flat square of plastic having a different programme on each side, top and bottom. Two keyplates are supplied with the machine, others were available if needed. This machine was narrower tha...

    My parents bought one of these (well actually the later 15690 with hot fill `E' button) to replace a Parnall Spinwasher. It was an enormous disappointment regardinging hot water wastage in particular, not having a sealed inner drum. Not only did the Parnall have a sealed inner drum which in itself saved an enormous amount of water (the outer tub didn't need to fill to fill the inner drum) but the hot sudsy water could be saved after being spun off for the next load of washing. N.B. The first GE top loading Automatic also had a sealed inner drum & suds saving feature, launched in 1947 !

    Hi Alistair, do you know why Hotpoint changed from a 4 pole to a 2 pole motor to drive the later models.? Ibelieve both motors gave the same result except the tw0 pole motor gave more noise and vibration. My mother bought a 1509-05 in 1977 add ran it for over 20 years with the odd repair by me. By the way i hear a slight bearing whine on your machine. Have they ever been replaced? Great post. Clive in Sheffield.

      Clive, personally I do not know why they changed the motor, perhaps others can explain why. The machine is currently with an enginner for a bit of much needed TLC although it is still filly operational. You are always welcome to pop down to see the collection, it is not far from you

    Hi Alistair, the 7 different currents were only there before laundry was added. That stopped most of them as the contents were just then tangled up as most Hoovermatic users will remember. Kind regards, Clive from Sheffield

      I am only passing on what I was told by a former Hoover executive about 10 years ago. Of course tangling was an issue although adding the clothes whilst the impellor is stationery and not overloading were helpful

    Well, as others have already said in the comments, Vanity Box is very much still there as it ever was - closed, but there. Having taken a mini-break "up north" to Morecambe, I decided today to swing by Blackpool on the way home, just for the fun of it and because I could. My first port of call was Vanity Box, and the outside looks every bit as spotlessly clean & tidy as it ever was both in the film and on Google maps. The shiny green composite door that now hangs on the side of the shop where the industrial-looking pull down shutters once were, gives rise to the impression it may lead to a front parlour, however, even with the dense net curtain that hangs in the window it was possible just from standing on the edge of the curb to make out the silhouette of a row of hood dryers in the front bay, and a shining reflection of the same from the mirrors on the opposite wall. As if, perhaps, the shop may be closed physically for now, but remains every bit as ready for business, should it be needed. I imagine Vanity Box may have all but closed due to the number of years Hilary spent running it and for few other reasons, certainly in the city I live in it's a very, very rare occurrence for a women's salon to close down for anything other than retirement - most seem to be taken over by new owners at the very least, and seeing two or more busy salons in the same row of shops is nothing unusual here. In a world of chain-stores and franchised brands, it's so easy to forget that a good deal of services can only ever be provided successfully on the most local of levels.

    This is such a bittersweet video. The passage of time and fashions have made beauty shops like this so rare nowadays. The idea of the “funeral bag” that different ladies would borrow for funerals and it would be stocked with a bit of money and a mint was so considerate. Loved this documentary!

    • @sdm3447
      @sdm3447 2 місяці тому

      The funeral bag was just the sweetest thing...the diary of death was, however, a whole new level! One has to wonder how such a document would have stood up to the rules of the modern-day GDPR. I know it's a cliche, but there is so much mileage in it, when I say that times were in so many ways much simpler back then...if it wasn't for Hilary's dislike of smoking (a fact that we learnt about from the documentary) you can be sure that several of her old girls would have been puffing away while under the dryer, such was the culture of day. I find it so, so hard to understand that 1994 was, in fact, thirty years ago. It seems like only yesterday.

    • @Vacbear58
      @Vacbear58 3 місяці тому

      Hoover manufactured a very similar model in the USA and they should come up from time to time on Ebay, Craigslist and FB Marketplace. They were not sold in vast numbers as automatics were far more popular but they were on sale for many years. Maytag also produced a twin tub of their own design and Speed Queen had the Simplicity which was based on the UK Servis Supertwin

    that one salon owner MUST have been the inspiration for mrs merton 😁 crikey. oh but the lady with the luscious long silver hair! wow. so nice to see older ladies with longer hair. really beautiful. i think the production is definitely of it's time. the slightly annoying tinkly piano music, and the repeat vignette of the girl skating. somewhat contrived. and i won't be convinced that they aren't playing up to the camera - just a little bit. entertaining, none the less.

    • @sdm3447
      @sdm3447 2 місяці тому

      They were all oh-so playing up to the camera at times, never more so the part where Hilary talks about her mother coming to the salon each morning "generally chewing an apple", and cue the grin & nod to camera...and from my end the sound of tumbleweed passing by...the fact that she thought it was funny is what make me giggle, not it being funny in isolation, because it wasn't. Nevertheless, the story about the woman getting knocked over outside Kwik Save never ceases to reduce me to fits - "I'VE BEEN IN THE GAZETTE BEFORE!". As for Mrs Merton, I don't doubt she was drawn from Hilary's "type", but whether Blackpool or Birmingham, women like her existed all over. As a child of the 70s who grew up in the 80s & 90s, I adored them.

      Those Indesits were pretty oddball machines all things considered. One of their defining features is the spin cycle: you can't shut it off completely (but you can shorten it) because the machine uses a parasite water pump (rather than a separate pump) that needs the motor to spin up to high RPM just so it could pump the water out. So, by definition, every spin on it (and there are five of them) will be a sudslock because the pump doesn't pump out the water until the spin starts. It was a cost-cutting measure, and not a very successful one. It took them until the Series 2000 to start producing actually capable washing machines.

    This was EXACTLY the same way in the States. Anyone old enough to remember the 1980's will definitley remember this scenario and how virtually all their daughters broke the cycle by never going as women became more empowered to do their own hair with the Advent of the hand held blow dryer.
